Press Release: Staging Pictures: Early Polaroids by Robert Stivers
It is with great pride that Dark Spring Press announces our second publication, Staging Pictures: Early Polaroids by Robert Stivers, drawing attention to a previously unseen body of work that constitutes the artist’s working practice and documents the development of many of the themes and subjects for which he is so well known. Robert Stivers is an internationally recognized artist and has been published to great acclaim, beginning with Robert Stivers: Photographs, published in 1997 by Arena Editions to his most recent publication, The Art of Ruin, published by Twin Palms Publishers in 2015. This is Stivers sixth book to date. "Stivers is an unabashed romantic in his artistic vision. He uses light, shadow, tone, and texture to create a visual tension to permeate his images with an air of mystery. As in so much provocative art, Stivers' photographs put forward questions rather than provide answers.” - Robert Flynn Johnson.
Staging Pictures: Early Polaroids by Robert Stivers focuses on Stivers’s working Polaroid prints, shot with a Hasselblad camera for instant proofing of lighting and composition of his subjects – including both models and still lifes, usually in a controlled studio setting. These previously unseen images, photographed in the 1980’s and 90’s, were used as working prints and then long hidden away in the artist’s archives. Stivers hand-worked the surfaces of these Polaroids using various materials to scratch, color, burn, and collage them, inspiring him to create his finished exhibition photographs. The early Polaroids lend insight into the working process of the photographer and reveal early glimpses of the subjects that inspired Stivers throughout his 30-year career.
Photo-Eye Gallery and Bookstore located in Santa Fe, New Mexico is planning a book signing for late April 2018. Robert Stivers will be present to sign books and greet the public; dates to be announced.
