Ginza
Ginza
Artist and publisher Andy Burgess’s latest monograph is an intimate and tactile book of Polaroids taken in the summer of 2025 whilst traveling in Japan. Focusing on Ginza, the high-end shopping and business district in the heart of Tokyo, this collection of soft mauve and lavender toned images is surprisingly poetic and painterly.
Known for its cutting-edge, modern buildings, Ginza is home to the flagship retail stores of many of the world’s leading fashion brands such as Fendi, Hermes and Tiffany. Burgess’s soft focus and dream-like Polaroids reimagine these glass-clad temples to consumerism as glistening, light-reflective sculptures. Architectural images are accompanied by other quirkier and unexpected visual delights, cars and bikes covered in protective tarpaulins like Christo sculptures, and odd-shaped windows that suggest an altered and abstract way of interpreting the visual world.
Seeking a temporary escape from digital image making and a format that required a more discerning eye, Burgess turned to the new Polaroid Flip instant camera. Discovering that the film stock itself can be unstable and unpredictable, Burgess leaned into the element of serendipity. He was delighted to discover that almost all the film shot in Ginza developed with a soft plum-like tone that created a unique and coherent body of images. The bookmaking process became a series of conscious choices to match the font, paper, and card stock to the tonality of the prints. The result is a delightfully unique book that reads like a long ode to that most Japanese of blooms – the cherry blossom.

“The absence of recognizable subject matter in a painting allows the painting itself to be the subject matter, and an old wall, in a quiet alleyway, underpass or on the side of a crumbling building, is its own theme. A picture of a wall may well be a ‘picture of nothing,’ but on that nothing lies all sorts of curious human contemplation and reflection…”
- Andy Burgess
“You know... that a blank wall is an apalling thing to look at...
The wall of a museum, a canvas, a piece of film, or a guy sitting in front of a typewriter. Then, you start out to do something, that vague thing called creation. The beginning strikes awe within you.”
-Edward Steichen
